The Intersect

Inevitable? Yes. Predictable? Let’s hope not.

I’m not going to hide this “spoiler,” because I think that anyone who was watching Chuck last season realizes that eventually, the government is going to finish the new Intersect, and Chuck will become expendable. It’s inevitable that, at some point, Casey will be ordered to finish the job he was sent to do. General Beckman began preparing Casey — and us — for just that inevitability in Chuck vs. the Crown Vic, and Josh Schwartz confirms that it’s gonna happen in season two.

I love this show. It’s unhealthy how much I love this show, okay? But let me just say now that if they take the predictable route and make Casey the bad guy so Sarah can be the hero? I’ll stop watching. Cold turkey. And I know a lot of other fans will, too, not least of which are the legions of Adam Baldwin fanzombies who follow him blindly from fandom to fandom and seem genuinely unable to distinguish between John Casey and Jayne Cobb (despite those convenient pesky facial hair and speech pattern differences.) They are many, and they will be noticed. And for once, I’m glad of that.

I watch Chuck for a lot of reasons. The great ensemble cast, the amazing chemistry, and the snappy dialogue are only the first few that spring to mind. Every spoiler that leaks, regardless of the excitement and optimism with which it is delivered, leaves me a little less confident that season two will live up to season one’s legacy. I want to believe they’re trying to lower our expectations with lame spoilers and stunt casting so they can blow us away with the best season of television NBC has ever seen, but… I just don’t trust television writers that much anymore. Maybe I’ve just had my heart broken one too many times by the Stargate writers, who have consistently fallen short of their potential for greatness, relying instead on special effects, well-loved sci-fi clichés and their amazing cast to carry them through to the next season. Maybe I’ve had it ripped out one too many times by Joss Whedon’s penchant for hitting us where it hurts just because he’s good at it. In any case, the only thing I do trust is that sooner or later, my favorite shows will let me down.

I really hope that Josh Schwartz and the rest of the writers on the Chuck staff prove me wrong.

  1. Dude - its Josh here. I logged in just to write you. Worry not. The first 3 episodes are the best we’ve ever done.

  2. Good /\ [GG]. Having Casey being conflicted between his duty and his growing…well…getting used to Chuck [G] ought to be an actor’s dream for Adam. He’ll take anything you throw at him dramatically and ace it.

I’m wondering about some kind of witness protection program or even going on the run. [Maybe don't tell me if I hit close to the truth, 'kay?]. They [Casey, Chuck, Sarah] could even seek ‘asylum’ in the UK [GG]. Cue probable James Bond and ‘Avengers’ nods, amongst others.

    Keep up the good work!
