‘Chuck’ intends to come out swinging

Josh Schwartz talks to USA Today about sexing up Chuck, and this blogger is genuinely confused by the following quote:

Sexing up Chuck could provide a bigger audience, but that could cut into the audience for Schwartz’s CW series Gossip Girl, the sexed-up teen soap that happens to compete in the same Monday time slot as Chuck. “The truth is, the time period is very competitive,” says Schwartz, who splits time between both. “But the shows have different audiences. Gossip Girl is strong with women. It could use a few more dudes (as viewers). Chuck has a strong male following. It could used [sic] more (women).”

I realized, after reading this interview, that I don’t really know any male Chuck fans, through fandom or personally. I know they exist, but I honestly had assumed that because all the Chuck fans I interact with regularly were women, that we made up the majority of the fan base.

The article goes on to add that the season premiere is designed to be sort of a second pilot, and mentions that “Chuck’s first-year growth [...] allowed for bigger budgets this season and has made it more attractive for guest stars.”

I don’t know about the rest of you, but to me, all this publicity is making the next 35 days seem excruciatingly long!

  1. Well Chuck is actually doing something that other shows have hard time doing, and that is attracting both male and female public. I am 26 years old male and I am addicted to Chuck. Perfect mix of comedy, action and romance. I think this kind of mix of different genres are the future for TV shows. And if you want hang out with other (both men and women) who like chuck joins us on http://www.chucktv.net/forum

  2. Well, I’m aware of a LOT of women watching ‘Chuck’.

    Eye-candy ;-).

The younger ones swoon over Chuck and/or Bryce; there’s a fairly vocal Devon following and a VERY appreciative number of older ladies who are watching Casey [GG].

Plus, we like strong women [Sarah, Lou, Ilsa, Ellie...etc].
And a lot of us are geeks too.

Anyone from Chuck who happens to make it over for Dragon Con will see at least one of those maturer ladies [me!] in full Weinerlicious mode on Friday.
