Clarification

Yes, the article I linked in my last post was… pretty vile, in terms of sexist content. I was perhaps too polite in saying it was “liberally peppered with misogyny.” The guy unscrewed the lid and poured in the whole tin. I was trying to be diplomatic and let you take from it what you would without coloring your perception with my own opinions.

Here’s my own opinion: The guy’s a sad, sexist creep who’s butthurt because women have standards and/or because at some point, we unchained ourselves from the kitchen sink and rustled us up some rights. He kind of needs to grab himself by the bootstraps and pull himself out of the 1950s.

I said I thought he made some valid points. Please don’t misunderstand me: I wasn’t speaking about his main point, or as Green_Grrl called it, his “premise in search of an essay.” I meant more minor points, like that everyone’s opinion of Chuck was completely different and considerably more positive once they thought he had a hot girlfriend, and that Sarah’s profession has forced her to become an emotionally cut-off, lonely person. Also the observations on Devon and Morgan were pretty spot-on.

The fact that there are men out there who identify with Chuck and vilify Sarah for the problems in his life is just one more symptom of a bigger problem. Chuck’s life doesn’t suck because Sarah can’t decide what she wants, Chuck’s life sucks because he’s been dealt a crappy hand. And it’s not Sarah but Bryce who’s holding most of the cards, even if maybe he had good intentions. But the truth is that Sarah is inconsistent, and there are those who will view Sarah as a tease for running hot and cold, even if her inconsistency is more likely a ham-handed attempt on the writers’ behalf to show that she is conflicted.

The tl;dr version is that I didn’t agree with most of what he was saying, just a few points, but the post’s existence illustrates a greater problem (and not just that occasionally, I fail at communicating effectively.)
